Vic: Firefighters hope to contain Big Desert blaze today
MELBOURNE, Dec 24 AAP - Firefighters hope to contain Victoria's biggest bushfire in20 years today after extreme weather conditions eased yesterday.
The fire has burned across 178,000 hectares of scrub and farmland in Victoria's north-westafter it was sparked by lightning strikes in the Big Desert Wilderness park one week ago.
Southerly winds and cooler temperatures yesterday had helped firefighters contain thenorthern fronts of the fire.
Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment spokesman Kevin Monk said firefightershoped to have most of the blaze contained today, although crews would remain working onit through Christmas.
The massive fire has destroyed only one property - the vacant home of racing car driverLarry Perkins, south of Cowangie.
About 300 firefighters were still battling the fire yesterday, using four firebombingaircraft and five light reconnaissance planes.
