LONDON -- British researchers report that pills currently used in the treatment of common skin infections that are caused by fungi might also be beneficial to some people experiencing severe cases of asthma. Volunteers with an allergic reaction to at least one fungi demonstrated significant improvements in their asthma after taking antifungal itraconazole pills.
Although it has been known that airborne fungi can worsen asthma, the study, published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, is believed to be the first to show that antifungal therapy might improve severe asthma symptoms.
