Fed: Labor warns Aust. can't afford to aid US in Iraq
The federal government says it will consider its position if the US struck againstIraq but Labor warns Australia could not afford to help.
US President GEORGE W BUSH and British Prime Minister TONY BLAIR today warned of thecapabilities of Iraqi leader SADDAM HUSSEIN as they met in Texas to discuss their options.
Both leaders say Iraq must prove it had not developed weapons of mass destruction, particularly after SADDAM HUSSEIN ordered out United Nations weapons inspectors in thelate 1990s.
Australia will consider its position if the United States opts for military intervention in Iraq.
But Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says US military action in Iraq as part of thewar on terrorism is not a foregone conclusion.
But opposition foreign affairs spokesman KEVIN RUDD says Australia could not affordto join the fight against terrorism in Iraq because its defence budget is grossly overstretched.
Mr RUDD says Australia was already heavily committed to forces in Afghanistan and East Timor.
