NSW: Debnam says gun crime rampant in south-west Sydney
SYDNEY, Aug 6 AAP - At least 68 gun crimes have been reported in NSW since the stateelection, including seven in the past week, the opposition said today.
Opposition police spokesman Peter Debnam said the Carr government should admit guncrime is out of control, especially in south-west Sydney, where two more shootings occurredovernight in Greenacre and Kemps Creek.
"The illegal handgun culture is out of control and our biggest problem is the Carrgovernment is still in denial," Mr Debnam said.
"Why hasn't the Carr government declared war on thugs with illegal guns trading in death?
"Since the March state election, south-west Sydney has suffered a spate of drive-byshootings, kneecappings, armed robberies and other gun crime."
Mr Debnam said the government must urgently double funding and resources for investigationof shootings and implement a police strategy for random weapon searches of vehicles incrime hot spots.
It should also offer rewards of $50,000 for information leading to convictions forany unsolved drive-by shootings, kneecappings or armed robberies and reverse the currentminimalist approach to charging and sentencing for unlicensed and/or unregistered gunoffences.
"Despite the large number of shootings in recent years and many warnings from crimeauthorities, the Carr government has failed to find a crime-fighting strategy that works,"
Mr Debnam said.
