Fed: ACTU calls for laws on super fund investments
The peak union body says superannuation funds should be legally forced to disclose
whether they take the environmental, social and ethical impact of their investments into
account.
ACTU president SHARAN BURROW says Australian workers should have a greater say in the
running of companies in which they have shares.
Ms BURROW says more Australian workers own shares, mostly indirectly through their
superannuation funds, than ever before.
And she says workers don't want their financial returns to come at the expense of social
concerns, such as the environment and human rights.
Ms BURROW has told the Sydney Institute the ACTU supports the Australian Conservation
Foundation's call for legislation that would require pension funds to disclose whether
they take account of the environment, social and ethical impact of investments.
